Los Angeles’ Night of Ideas 2023, took place at the University of Southern California (USC)\u2019s Doheny Memorial Library (DML 240) and <\/span>tackled<\/span>\u00a0the theme of\u00a0\u201csustainability\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0economic, social, and ecological standpoints,\u00a0<\/strong>while also<\/span><\/span>\u00a0questioning the\u00a0viability of our own behaviors and lifestyles.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a time where social conflicts are increasingly acute and underline tensions between individual and collective scales, addressing socio-economic and environmental issues were pressing, we<\/span>\u00a0examined<\/span>\u00a0society\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>relationship to\u00a0<\/span>climate crises<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and li<\/span>stened to both <\/span>individual solutions<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>public policies<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>proposed to the challenges we face<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span><\/span>end of abundance<\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0ecological disasters, housing problems, etc.)<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After giving an overview of the issues, the conversation shifted to our<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>representation of ourselves<\/strong>,\u00a0as individuals and bodies<\/em>,\u00a0<\/span>in order to<\/span>\u00a0better rethink the collective.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All these notions were explored through artistic performances, <\/strong>using dancing and drawing to highlight key debates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The 2022 Night of Ideas in Los Angeles took place on May 9, Europe Day, at the R\u00e9sidence de France<\/span><\/p>\n

While France held the presidency of the Council of the European Union, we focused the event on a dialogue between Europe and the United States.\u00a0 Democratic crisis, environmental issues, and new challenges of cultural institutions were some of the major themes which were talked about. Visual and sound art performances were showcased alongside three roundtables and several speed meetings with our guests.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The same night,\u00a0 Night of Ideas reached far outside of Southern California, as events were organized in Phoenix, in partnership with Alliance Fran\u00e7aise of Greater Phoenix, the International School of Arizona, and Arizona State University;\u00a0 and in Tucson, Arizona, with the University of Arizona and iGLOBES. Finally,\u00a0 the Alliance Fran\u00e7aise of Denver hosted an online conference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
