The founding of Kansas City is attributed to men, such as Fran\u00e7ois Chouteau, Gabriel Prudhomme, John McCoy, and the 14 investors who formed the Town Company in 1838. However, the role of women in the city’s early development is often overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While Chouteau established a fur trading outpost for his family\u2019s business, it was his wife B\u00e9r\u00e9nice who encouraged other French-speaking families, primarily fur trappers and their Native American wives, to settle in the area. Among them was Gabriel Prudhomme, whose lands would be purchased by the Town Company to establish the City of Kansas \u2013 but only after his widow, Josephine, and oldest daughter petitioned Jackson County Circuit Court to settle the estate.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

In this edition of Night of Ideas, Kathy Krause, Emerita Professor of French at the University of Missouri Kansas City, examines how the French-speaking women who lived in \u201cChez les Canses\u201d (village of the Kanza) \u2013 those of European ancestry, Native Americans, m\u00e9tis women, and enslaved African Americans \u2013 transformed the land at the confluence of the Kaw and Missouri rivers into a vibrant francophone community during the early decades of 19th<\/sup>century.<\/p>\n
