While the 2004 disaster movie “The Day After Tomorrow” presented a somewhat spectacular vision of the climate crisis, we must admit that in 2024, the catastrophe is already at work and is slowly but surely taking hold. Entitled “The Day After Yesterday,” Night of Ideas 2024 in Miami encourages us to question ourselves, and to think about our relationship with new technologies and our heritage, which above all raises the question of our individual and collective responsibilities to get through the crisis already underway.

The night will begin with a special musical performance by Villa Albertine residents Julian Babou and Sonny Troupé, followed by two panel discussions. By ‘creolizing’ their musical heritage embedded in Guadeloupe (Caribbean) and La Réunion (Indian Ocean), Sonny Troupé and Julian Babou will celebrate their people’s ties to nature and the importance of their ancestral heritage.

The first panel focuses on AI and Smart Cities, encompassing subjects from urban planning and new technologies to the geopolitics of raw materials and sustainable urbanism. The second panel deals with the urban garden and finding solutions through agricultural co-ops, food forests, and botanical heritage conservation.

Last, but not least, the evening will close with a concert by Cuban percussionist and composer Degnis Bofill.

This edition of Night of Ideas Miami is co-presented with partners Books & Books, Alliance Française Miami Metro, WDNA, Convivencia, and the France Florida Foundation for the Arts.
