YCP’s Department of The Arts and Humanities is excited to participate in the 2022 edition of the Night of Philosophy and Ideas. This annual celebration of the importance of thought began in 2015 as a partnership between the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and New York City. It has grown to a world-wide phenomenon with events occurring in over 230 locations in 100 countries. The world-wide theme this year is “(Re)Building Together ((Re)construire ensemble)”.

York’s version of the event will occur on Saturday, May 7th at Marketview Arts (address), and will last from 7pm to Midnight.

Beginning at 7, attendees will experience live jazz while exploring the artwork displayed in Gallery Hall. At 7:30 we will begin a series of presentations and discussions by experts from YCP and the region. Come for an hour, stay for the night! Food and drink will be available for purchase.

The event is free and open to the public. We are encouraging attendees to wear masks indoors if not actively consuming food.

Environmental Resiliency Panel “Resiliency…Overcoming Ecological Challenges and Disasters” (6:10-6:55)

Panelists will explore coastal resilience and rebuilding at multiple scales but incorporate time scales (short-term/disaster recovery; medium-term; long-term) and geographic/community scales (home, neighborhood, locality, etc.) to give a comprehensive vision of what can and will be done in our area in the near and long term future.

BeatHunter Dance, created by Joél Casanova, performs a piece about isolation and unity. We have all experienced the sting of isolation but unity makes us stronger.

Online Lecture: Art During the Plague

The Alliance Française of Denver will present a two-part lecture by French artist Frederick Pichon. The first part will illustrate the artistic representations of medieval Europe up until the outbreak of the Plague, while the second will analyze the changes produced by the epidemic on the artists of the time and the way they influenced generations following the tragedy.

Between Dreams and Realities…Where Are We Going?

The Alliance Française of Greater Phoenix, in partnership with International School of Arizona and Arizona State University, is organizing a literary meeting with three young French-speaking authors; Joseph Kochmann (Franco-American author and screenwriter), Cécile Cognet (writer and French teacher), and Billy Pierre (Haitian writer who has just published his first novel: “A l’autre bout d’un rêve”). Through the exploration of the work of these three writers, immersed between dreams and realities, we will try to sketch an answer to the theme of the Night of ideas…where are we going? 

Mark Cruse, literature profesor at Arizona State University, moderates the conversation.  

Some of the paintings of the artist Teresa Derbez-Brown (Franco-Mexican and American) will be exhibited on this occasion.

Arizona, a Laboratory for the World: Conference-Debate on Contemporary Social and Environmental Challenges

Arizona is a state where contemporary ecological and social issues are at stake: climate change, water management, agricultural needs, but also the relationship of citizens to the world and to the community. The University of Arizona is a world-renowned institution for its environmental research and has a developped a long-standing collaboration history with French universities and research institutes such as CNRS. This has resulted in the iGLOBES International Research Laboratory and in the France-Arizona Institute for Global Grand Challenges, focusing on environmental and spatial research and data sciences from an interdisciplinary perspective. 

Sharon Megdal, Director of the Water Resources Research Center (University of Arizona) will participate in a roundtable discussion with Sébastien Roux, sociologist, Deputy Director of iGLOBES (CNRS, Paris Sciences et Lettres, University of Arizona), Joaquin Ruiz, geochemist, Director of the France-Arizona Institute for Global Grand Challenges (CNRS, University of Arizona) and Andrew Curley, Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona and specialist of the everyday incorporation of Indigenous nations issues in an era of energy transition and climate change.

In this period of intense geopolitical upheaval in Europe and around the world, La Nuit des Idées, or the Night of Ideas, will invite researchers, writers, artists and community leaders to question the theme Where Are We Going? Coordinated by the Institut Français, Night of Ideas is being presented in 100 countries worldwide, including the United States. The event was first introduced to the US in 2015 by the French Embassy, and has now become a nationwide phenomenon, drawing tens of thousands of people to events across the country.

The murder of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man who was killed during his arrest by a white police officer on May 25, 2020, caused the emotion and anger of millions of people in Minneapolis, across the United States, and around the world. His death has become a rallying cry against police brutality and a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement. While reinventing its forms of action, its activists continue the long history of the struggle for racial equality. Where are we going? What is the future of this movement which has become one of the most influential in the defense of civil rights? The Alliance Française of Minneapolis invites several speakers to consider the subject.

Where Is the Lou Headed: Between the Pandemic and the War
Co-organized by the St. Louis Alliance Française and Webster’s Centre Francophone 

The concept of St. Louis’ Nuit des idées aligns with those organized in different cities across the United States. Participants such as Isabelle Heidbreder (Honorary Consul of France in St. Louis) and Julian Schuster (President of Webster University) would answer the following question: “Where are we headed?” All participants will tackle this question according to their respective field of expertise and in no more than 5 minutes. The idea is to share expectations, aspirations, and concerns for the future of St. Louis, from different angles and perspectives, all in light of ongoing events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Each participant will have to answer questions and interact with the audience for about 10 minutes after their presentations.
