Night of Ideas – San Juan, Puerto Rico

Thursday, May 12, 2022, 6:00 pm

The Alliance Française de Puerto Rico (APFR) will present for the first time the Night of Ideas, a night of debates as part of the United States “Where are we going?” edition. The APFR team and its partners are specifically looking at how to re-build together.

After the devastating passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, the earthquakes of January 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic and in a degraded socio-economic context, community initiatives are trying, all over Puerto Rico, to provide innovative answers for a promising future that respects the environment and the specific wealth of the Caribbean region.

To encourage dialogue between Puerto Rico, the United States, the Caribbean and France, AFPR met with committed specialists in the world of agriculture, art and education:

– María Benedetti is an author, researcher and educator in ethnobotany. Today, she is the director of BotaniCultura.

– Carite 3.0 is an association in the rural region of Guayama. Its objective is to train new farmers to optimize the management of their micro-enterprise.

– Casa Pueblo is a community center that aims to protect natural and human resources. It focuses on solar energy production and coffee cultivation.

– Vainilla Castañer is an agricultural project whose mission is to revitalize the vanilla crop, which still flourished in Puerto Rico in the 1940s and 1950s.

– Yaucromatic is an initiative of the association Arte Para Unir. This urban art project attracts local and international artists and visitors around its murals.

The AFPR, known for its European Film Festival, has produced a documentary that will fuel a debate expected around the world, especially by young people.

On May 12, 2022, the public will have the opportunity to see the documentary, interact with the protagonists and participate in workshops for reflection. The project will also be available on the AFPR website.

Night of Ideas – Minneapolis

The Black Lives Matter movement in Minneapolis: Where are we going?

In this period of intense geopolitical upheaval in Europe and around the world, La Nuit des Idées, or the Night of Ideas, will invite researchers, writers, artists and community leaders to question the theme Where Are We Going? Coordinated by the Institut Français, Night of Ideas is being presented in 100 countries worldwide, including the United States. The event was first introduced to the US in 2015 by the French Embassy, and has now become a nationwide phenomenon, drawing tens of thousands of people to events across the country. The murder of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man who was killed during his arrest by a white police officer on May 25, 2020, caused the emotion and anger of millions of people in Minneapolis, across the United States, and around the world. His death has become a rallying cry against police brutality and a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement. While reinventing its forms of action, its activists continue the long history of the struggle for racial equality. Where are we going? What is the future of this movement which has become one of the most influential in the defense of civil rights? The Alliance Française of Minneapolis invites several speakers to consider the subject.

Confirmed speakers: Toussaint Morrison and Debra L. HurstonThe mission of the Alliance Française Mpls/St Paul is to serve our community by promoting the use and appreciation of the French language and cultures through language classes, cultural programs, social events and educational resources. Our vision is to build a community of people who are passionate about Francophone culture in all its global diversity and who want to become – through high quality education as well as authentic and exciting cultural activities and social events – the go-to destination for everything that is French!
