Night of Ideas comes to Durham! The Center for French and Francophone Studies and the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University gather with Villa Albertine to host Durham’s very first nocturnal marathon of arts and ideas, on Duke’s centennial. The words of Julian F. Abele, West Campus’ Black chief designer under segregation, shine a light on forgotten legacies that shaped our cities and communities. Join artists, scholars, and members of the extended Durham community in addressing environmental, technological, and political challenges to social justice and exploring the limits of urbanity and urban metabolisms, in a call to repopulate liminal spaces of thought.
Featuring Felwine Sarr (philosopher and economist, Duke), Kofi Boone (landscape architect, NCSU), Tobin Freid (Sustainability Manager, Durham County) & Max Cawley (educator and researcher, Durham Museum of Life and Science), for a panel discussion on ‘Reinventing Cities’; Emmanuèle Cunningham-Sabot (Professor of Urban Planning, Ecole Normale Supérieure-PSL University), Léone-Alix Mazaud (PhD Candidate, Mines ParisTech-PCA Stream) & Sébastien Marot (historian of the environment and of landscape architecture, Ecole d’architecture des villes et des territoires Paris-Est), discussing ‘Urban biodiversities’; performances by T.I.E., Jingqiu Guan (and Kylan Salem) & Dasan Ahanu, and exhibitions by Tianming Zhou, David Benarroch, Max Schulte.
