Villa Albertine is an institution of the French Embassy in the United States, supported by the French government and Albertine Foundation. Villa Albertine’s mission is to strengthen ties between the United States, France and the French-speaking world through culture and education.  

In the arts and culture sphere, we encourage collaboration among French and US-based organizations and provide creators, thought leaders, and professionals with customized residencies, immersive networking experiences, grants, and connections to audiences so they can explore and share new insights into society’s pressing issues. 

In the field of education, we craft projects and programs aimed at making French language and culture accessible to young US-based audiences, expand opportunities for students to study and complete internships in France, and support partnerships between French and American higher education and research institutions.   

Villa Albertine is present in 10 major US cities –– Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Washington, DC –– and publishes an annual magazine, States. It is headquartered in New York’s historic Payne Whitney mansion, home to Albertine, our bookshop and nexus for French-American intellectual exchange.

Albertine Foundation is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting French American relations through innovative cultural and educational programs.   

In close partnership with Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education, Albertine Foundation administers grant programs across diverse creative disciplines including visual and performing arts; cinema; and literature, while also supporting exploratory residencies for creative professionals and thinkers across the United States. Albertine Foundation also contributes to promoting French language learning in the United States and funds new opportunities for students, professors, and researchers in the spheres of secondary and higher education.  

Albertine Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation by Internal Revenue Service determination. Contributions from corporate, foundation, and individuals are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The Institut français is responsible for France’s international cultural program. Supervised by both the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and by the Ministry of Culture, it promotes French culture abroad through cultural exchange initiatives. Operating in a space where the arts, intellectual exchange, cultural and social innovation, and linguistic partnerships interact and intersect, it is also responsible for promoting the French language and the sharing of works, artists, and ideas all over the world. The Institut français is one of Villa Albertine’s main French partners.

National Support

The Foundation’s work has included the underwriting of public spaces. This includes being the largest supporter of Washington’s Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the principal donor for the Emmett Till exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a major donor to New York’s Statue of Liberty Museum and to Washington’s United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and an early donor to Chicago’s Obama Presidential Center, its latest effort after decades of assistance on Chicago’s South Side.

In connection to French culture and history, it has long supported the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and has only accelerated this work since the 2019 fire; the Louvre Endowment; and education on Holocaust and Deportation scholarship including the 1988 Academy Award-winning documentary, Hotel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie.

Local Support

Alliance Française, Washington DC

Alliance Française de Washington DC is a nonprofit cultural and educational organization dedicated to promoting French language and Francophone cultures in the U.S. capital. As part of the global network of Alliance Française, it offers French language courses for all levels, as well as a wide range of cultural programs including talks, screenings, exhibitions, and performances.

In close connection with local and international partners, the organization fosters dialogue and cultural exchange between French, Francophone, and American communities. It serves as a key platform for educational outreach and public engagement in Washington, DC.

Bonjour Books

Bonjour Books is an independent French-language bookstore based in Washington, DC, dedicated to promoting Francophone literature and culture. It offers a curated selection of books in French for adults and children, spanning contemporary literature, classics, essays, and youth publications.

The bookstore also serves as a cultural hub, organizing author events, readings, and community gatherings that foster dialogue between French-speaking and American audiences.

Bonjour Books contributes to the visibility of Francophone voices in Washington and supports literary exchange within the broader cultural ecosystem of the city.

Duke Ellington School of the Arts

The Duke Ellington School of the Arts is a public high school in Washington, DC, dedicated to pre-professional training in the arts alongside a comprehensive academic curriculum. Founded in 1974, the school offers specialized programs in disciplines such as music, theater, dance, visual arts, and literary media.

Through rigorous artistic and academic instruction, it prepares students for higher education and professional careers in the arts. The school also plays a significant role in the cultural life of Washington, DC, regularly presenting performances and public events.

Friendship Place

Friendship Place is a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness. It supports individuals and families in securing stable housing while providing comprehensive services, including employment assistance and case management. Its work is grounded in the Housing First model, prioritizing immediate access to housing as the foundation for long-term stability and independence.

EUNIC

EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture) is a global network of European cultural institutes and national organizations, fostering international cultural cooperation. In Washington, D.C., the EUNIC cluster brings together European partners to promote dialogue, artistic exchange, and shared approaches to cultural diplomacy.

Peabody Institute

The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University is one of the leading conservatories in the United States, with campuses in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. It offers world-class training in music and dance, and plays a key role in shaping the next generation of artists through performance, education, and public engagement.

The DC Public Library

The DC Public Library is the public library system of Washington, D.C., serving diverse communities through access to knowledge, culture, and lifelong learning. Anchored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, it is a major civic and cultural hub, hosting a wide range of public programs, debates, and educational initiatives.

Histovery is a French company specializing in augmented reality and immersive cultural experiences. Through its flagship HistoPad technology, it develops innovative tools that enhance the visitor experience in museums and heritage sites, combining historical rigor with cutting-edge digital storytelling.
